OTHER TAXES

Apart from income tax, you may be subject to several other taxes in France:

TVA (TAXE SUR LA VALEUR AJOUTEE)

This is the direct equivalent of VAT or Value Added Tax in other EU member states such as the United Kingdom and the current French standard rate is 19.6%. There is a reduced rate of 5.5% payable on certain goods such as food and pharmaceuticals.

TAXE D'HABITATION

This tax is paid by occupants of all types of accommodation, as of 1 January each year. The basis of the charge is the rental value of the property, irrespective of whether it is owned or rented by you.

REDEVANCE AUDIOVISUELLE

This is paid by every household with a television and goes to fund public programming.

You will receive a combined statement for both these taxes around September or October. As with income tax, after the first year's payment you can choose to pay in monthly instalments.

TAXE FONCIERE (LAND TAX)

Tax paid by any property owner in France before the end of each year (usually before 15 October). Owners are also liable for taxe d'habitation.

TAXE PROFESSIONNELLE

A tax on all French business entities, be they companies or individual undertakings. The tax is based upon the annual rental value of tangible assets.
